📘 Andragogy: The Art and Science of Adult Learning

✏️ Summary of Henschke, J. (2016). A history of andragogy and its documents as they pertain to adult basic and literacy education. The PAACE Journal of Lifelong Learning, 25, 1.

🌟 What is Andragogy?

Andragogy, a term popularized by Malcolm Knowles, refers to the methods and principles used in adult education. Unlike pedagogy (focused on children), andragogy is learner-centered and emphasizes self-directed learning.

👤 Key Figure: Malcolm Knowles

📅 Origin: First introduced in the 1830s, refined in the 20th century

📌 Key Assumptions of Adult Learners

Knowles identified six core assumptions about adult learners:

📖 Assumption	💡 Meaning
1. Self-Concept	Adults want control over their learning. They learn best when treated as responsible decision-makers.
2. Experience	Prior knowledge and life experiences shape how adults learn. They learn better through real-world applications.
3. Readiness to Learn	Learning is most effective when it is relevant to their personal or professional lives.
4. Orientation to Learning	Adults prefer problem-solving approaches over memorization. They seek practical applications for new knowledge.
5. Motivation	Internal factors (career growth, personal goals) drive adult learners more than external rewards.
6. Need to Know	Adults need to understand why learning something is important before engaging with it.

🛠️ Applying Andragogy in Education

To create an effective learning environment for adults, educators should:

✅ Use real-world examples and case studies
✅ Encourage self-directed learning with choices and flexibility
✅ Acknowledge learners' experiences and integrate them into lessons
✅ Create a collaborative environment where learners share insights
✅ Make learning relevant to career, personal, or social goals

💡 Example: Instead of a lecture, an instructor might facilitate a group discussion where learners apply theories to their work experiences.

🎯 Conclusion: Why Andragogy Matters

Andragogy shifts education from teacher-led to learner-driven, making learning more engaging, relevant, and impactful. Understanding these principles helps educators design better courses and support adult learners effectively.

📌 Key Takeaway: Adults learn best when education is self-directed, experience-based, and problem-centered.
